Agri-Spouse Friday - Week 10

Welcome back to our Agri-Spouse Quilt Along.

It would appear that fall has arrived here. It got cold enough that I finally had to switch to full length pants and long sleeves, switch the thermostat to full heat rather than a heat/cool setting and have switched out our bedding from the lighter summer weight to the cozy winter weight sheets. I'm always sorry to see the end of summer. I love the sun and warmth and don't like the cold and here I live in a city this far north. Sure there are plenty of people that live plenty further north but I am the type of person that could happily live in Australia. I will admit though that winter is really good for snuggling up with some fabric and my sewing machine in my sewing room during a snow storm.

Mom has told me that she is finally done with all of the work that she has been doing for her church and is now ready to do a quick organization of her office in order to make it into a sewing room and then get sewing. Suzanne and a couple of others have promised to help her get up to speed and get through so hopefully we will have pictures from her soon.

I had planned to post some pictures of my dearest husband in Montreal last week but I forgot to download the pictures from him. He went there for an Artillery conference with the army. He had a great time and learned a lot.  Plus he spent the whole time he was there dressed up all fancy! He was in a variety of suits pretty much the whole time, from his mess kit to the green army suit to a tie and vest to his artillery "blues and greys". From the pictures that I have seen, he looked good! Plus he met Generals and made contacts and all that other stuff. I am most certainly proud of my wonderful man.

Otherwise, I have pictures from Marian this week. First is Marian's Whirlpool:

Next up is Marian's Old Windmill:

I am having so much fun doing this quilt along. I love how the same block looks so different just from changing up the fabrics.

This week we will start with Block #103 - Whirlpool.

Cut  four grey 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares.
Cut  four orange 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares.
Cut four orange 2" x 2" squares.
Cut one 3 1/2" by 3 1/2" square.

Place one 2 1/2" grey square RST with one 2 1/2" orange square. Pin on the diagonal. Draw a line diagonally on the wrong side of the lighter fabric. Sew a seam 1/4" from the line you have just drawn and then sew a 1/4" seam on the other side of the line you drew. Then place your ruler along the line you drew and slice the two HSTs apart Set the seam and press to one side. Repeat the process with the remaining three grey/orange 2 1/2" squares to make all of the squares into HSTs. Trim your HSTs to 1 1/2" square. You should now have eight grey/orange HSTs that measure 1 1/2" square.

Arrange all of your HSTs the way they are supposed to look. We will number the pieces as if there were still sixteen pieces and the large centre square is piece 6/7/10/11.

Flip 1 RST onto 2 and sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for set 3/4 then 5/9 then 8/12 then 13/14 and lastly 15/16. These seams don't meet up so you don't have to worry too much about nesting the seams.

Flip the 1/2 set RST onto the 3/4 set and sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Flip the 13/14 set RST onto the 15/16 set and sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Next flip the 5/9 set RST onto the large square and sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Then flip the 8/12 set RST onto the opposite side of the large square from where you just sewed and sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side.

Last, flip the long, narrow piece RST onto the larger piece and sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Then flip the other long narrow piece RST onto the larger piece and sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side and our first block is complete!

Next we will do Block #34 - Flock.

Cut four blue 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares.
Cut four yellow 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares.
Cut one yellow 4" x 4" square.
Cut one red 4" x 4" square.

Place one 2 1/2" yellow square RST with one 2 1/2" blue square. Repeat the process with the remaining three yellow/blue 2 1/2" squares to make all of the squares into HSTs. Trim your HSTs to 1 1/2" square. You should now have eight yellow/blue HSTs that measure 1 1/2" square. Repeat the process with the yellow/red 4" squares to make these squares into HSTs. Trim these HSTs to 3 1/2" square and you should now have two yellow/red HSTs that measure 3 1/2" square.

Arrange all of your HSTs the way they are supposed to look.

Flip one yellow/blue HST onto another yellow/blue HST and sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other yellow/blue HSTs.

Flip one yellow/blue HST pair RST onto another yellow/blue HST pair and sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other two yellow/blue HST pairs.

Flip one yellow/blue HST four patch RST onto one yellow/red HST and sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side. Repeat for the other yellow/red HST and yellow/blue HST four patch.

Lastly flip the two pieces RST onto each other and sew a 1/4" seam, set the seam and press to one side and our second block is complete!

And that is our two blocks complete for this week!

Next weekend is Thanksgiving here in Canada and it is a busy weekend for us but it is a time filled with family. I do still plan to post on Friday though so keep your eye out for the post.

Have a great week!

  1. Thanks Sweetie, looking good. Yes, I am madly trying to create order in the chaos that is my office/sewing room. Then to get started if not catch up.
